This small chapbook is one of the winners of the Virgil Hutton Haiku Memorial contest held annually in the US. It is an unusual collection of haiku moments, capturing quick fleeting images in words. There are occasional illustrations, accompanying haiku. The chapbook is something one could slip into a coat pocket for a train journey and be amply entertained by. Some favourites: mirror pond i reflect offguard kiss another view of Orion a blackbird shaking off the rain in the rainand especially this one: the hated cat sits calmly on the welcome mat as if he wereWhat is engaging about Barton's work is the way in which she can push the reader to think again, something difficult to achieve within the strict confines of a haiku. Her work is very enjoyable and the chapbook a worthy winner. | ||
