VIRGIL HUTTON: HAIKU HARVEST
HAIKU HARVEST is a delightful chapbook devoted to the poetry of the late Virgil Hutton. His widow, Lenore Hutton, has collected a selection of 'his personal favourites'. Hutton's work was characterized by his ability to catch ordinary images and juxtapose them so that they became true haiku 'moments'. These poems are never cumbersome, contrived or esoteric; every image has been 'seen' and conveyed to the reader with a telling simplicity. Here are some examples: Early Spring; the sidewalk blooms with crayon flowers Southwind blowing the snow into the sea Still beside the grinning pumpkin crackerjack marigolds Pruning trees The lake's and sweeping geese southward quiet striptease — the autumn wind the morning mistThis charming little book would make an ideal gift for any lover of haiku/senryu.
