PICKINGS

Poetry from NHI publications

THE MILKING
She showed him the milking,
his head pressed on her side,
deep and mother-belly-full —
how a squeeze, then a stroke
brought streams of release
           to fill up her pail;
he showed her the castle —
the stiff crest of a hat —
           how Roundheads
and Kings men suckled
           their Civil War tit;
on the straw bed
           of her shippen
he turned her bucket red.
