RURI HAZAMA: RAFFAELLO'S AZURE

This is an English-Japanese bilingual book of tanka. The book also contains four essays, two of which are given in English. These essays discuss tanka by Kagawa Hisa, and the future of tanka. Ruri Hazama spent six years in the US. She was educated at the Tokyo woman's Christian University where she studied European and American literary criticism. The tanka are set out two and three to a page, and a couple of examples are given below:

	when words come
	flowing from pen-tip
	time ceases,
	the clock is stopped
	by my movements

		great bushes
		of hibiscus planted
		in rows —
		an afternoon shower
		swaying their flowers
Amelia Fielden, an experienced tanka poet, assisted with the translations and not surprisingly the book is worthy of a bedside place.
