POETRY: THE NOTTINGHAM COLLECTION

The NOTTINGHAM COLLECTION is a formidable collection of poetry collated by editor John Lucas from, mostly, living poets with some association with Nottingham and its environs, 53 in all. It is glossily produced and presented and contains the work of greater and lesser poets who have had some sort of connection with the area, and in particular, poets associated with Nottingham Trent University. It is published as a companion volume to SATURDAY NIGHT and MONDAY MORNING (contemporary Nottingham fiction) to celebrate the tenth birthday of the Nottingham publisher Five Leaves.

As a collection of contemporary poetry, this is as good as it gets, being theme-free (other than geography) it is a cornucopia of the work of good versifiers, and a tribute to their insight as well as their craft.

Such variety and dis-similarity would make the choosing of any of its contributors not only difficult, but churlish. It goes without saying that this is a collection to acquire, and that its publication be universally applauded.

reviewer: John Cartmel-Crossley.
